For the last year and a half, classically trained oil painter Kelly Medford has taken her easel to Rome's streets daily to capture life happening out there in paint. Learning to dodge traffic on her bicycle, she sets up her easel anywhere she finds the light fit for painting.
Medford's first Italian solo show " Un'americana a Roma: Paintings and Stories from the Streets of Rome" includes over 30 paintings and accompanying stories told from over 15 different locations around the city. Exploring the city daily by bike and armed with her easel, she takes classical oil painting out with her, portraying the light and streets of Rome as they are today.
Shy about tourists and uninterested in the "hot spots" of Rome, Medford has chosen alleyways, markets and acqueducts as some of her themes. Sometimes populated with people and other times hauntingly empty, her canvases capture the rosy light and multi-layered timelessness of the city.
Throughout her time painting, she also researches each place by reading and talking with locals while painting on location. After the completion of a painting she writes a story, recounting both a historical and personal take on the location.
Kelly Medford has lived and worked painting in Italy over the past 8 years. She studied both in the United States and in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited her work extensively throughout the eastern U.S. and participated in countless plein air competitions, winning several prestigious awards, including most recently the St. Simon's Historical Landtrust Purchase award. She is a member of Urban Sketchers of Rome and leads private sketch tours around the city frequently.
