How exciting! In a few days I leave for Berlin. This will be my third time in this very special and perhaps even the most important city. This week marks the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the wall and I'm curious to see how the Berliners will celebrate this event.Is the wall just a memory for them or has it remained a characteristic feature of Berlin, even if in its place there is only a single row of small bricks 160km long?When it was torn down in '89, I was 17 and I did not quite appreciate the meaning of this epochal event. At Friends In Rome I met some German people who lived in Berlin. I listened to their stories in disbelief: a wall built in one night and suddenly, families were divided physically; literally standing in between them, young soldiers with guns to challenge you, the inability to move from one place to another and incredible escape attempts... Yet perhaps this absurd situation has stimulated the creativity of Berliners, making their city unique in Germany and Europe in terms of artistic, cultural and quality of life.
